Your tech devices are probably among the most valuable items you own. They’ve become almost indispensable in modern society, allowing you to shop, communicate and, in recent months, work from the comfort of your own home.
However, if you’ve ever lost your phone, tablet or laptop before, you’ll know the feelings of panic and helplessness all too well. Fortunately, features to help you track your devices down have been added to many major platforms in recent years, including Android, iOS and macOS.
That left one major omission, but Microsoft finally added a “Find My Device” feature to Windows 10 in its November 2019 update. Here’s how to use it.
While it’s almost impossible to lose, it’s worth noting that the feature is also available on Windows 10 PCs. Just make sure your device has GPS support and it should work.
How to set up Find My Device on Windows 10
- Make sure your device has been updated to at least the November 2019 update (version 1909). Head to Settings > System and click ‘About’ in the left pane. Scroll down to where it says “Windows specifications” and look for 1909 or 2004
- Once that’s sorted, head to Settings > Update & Security
- From here, look for the “Find My Device” option in the left pane
- Click the “Change” button, and you’ll be prompted with a toggle named “Save my device’s location periodically”
- Click it to turn the setting on, and you should now see a message saying “Find My Device is on”, like below
To make sure everything is working, log in to account.microsoft.com/devices with your Microsoft account and you should see the name of your PC listed under “Your devices.”
If you don’t know the name of your device, right-click on the Start button and select System. In the Control Panel window that opens you’ll see it under “Computer name.”
Unfortunately, this doesn’t allow you to get your device to make a sound, lock itself or erase any data, but we’re still holding out for Microsoft to add this functionality.
